Melody 101

Description: This workshop will introduce and examine the essential principles writing a song melody, including the principles of contour, motives, sequencing, half & full cadence. Principles will be reinforced through real world audio examples and creative exercises on their own instruments.

Goals: Students will be able to write simple melodic passages and start exploring self-expression.

Resources: Staff paper and pencils for students, magic board, audio system, piano or keyboard with speakers.

Duration: 50 minutes


Melody 102

Description: This workshop will introduce and examine the period and sentence forms of a melody, and how to employ different modal scales to effect expression. Principles will be reinforced through real world audio examples and creative exercises on their own instruments.

Goals: Students will be able explore self-expression through melody writing.

Species Counterpoint 101

Description: This workshop will introduce and examine the cantus firmus and first species of counterpoint according to 18th century tradition of Johann Joseph Fux.

Goals: Students will be able explore writing simple melodies and “note against note” counterpoint.

Resources: Staff paper and pencils for students, magic board, audio system, piano or keyboard with speakers.

Duration: 50 minutes


Species Counterpoint 102

Description: This workshop will introduce and examine the second species of counterpoint according to 18th century tradition of Johann Joseph Fux.

Goals: Students will be able explore writing simple melodies and 2:1 counterpoint.

Duration: 50 minutes


Species Counterpoint 104

Description: This workshop will introduce and examine 3:1 and 4:1 third species counterpoint according to 18th century tradition of Johann Joseph Fux.

Goals: Students will be able explore writing 3:1 and 4:1 counterpoint.
